"The
Cosmic Tide" series is about the mystery
and wonder of the life force. I find in the seas' and tides'
rhythms, patterns and ever-changing movement, metaphors
for the journey we call life. The seas' and tides' colors,
patterns and shapes are important to me because they convey
so well life's mystery, vitality, and rhythms. I frequently
see fractal shapes or patterns in the oceanic realm that
reveal underlying connections in life. The fractal patterns
of waves in the ocean, or of tides along the shore, often
emerge in my paintings. I paint with the colors of light,
versus the colors of pigment. I juxtapose the hot colors
of the sun and the cold colors of the water, versus light
and dark ones. When I paint, I alternate between exploring
a particular shape or symbol, and following where the paint
leads me in a rhythm much like the tide moving in and out
along the shore's periphery.
Magnum
photographer Leonard Freed describes my paintings as having
"a primitive power like that of Emil Nolde." He
further states that my work is "unconventional and
expresses emotion in a child-like, sensual way that says
something to one's inner soul."
These paintings
were created in New York and Costa Rica.
