These pieces
of painted furniture evolved out of my desire to literally
paint "off the canvas." I began by painting on a rug: a
flat canvas that would be walked on rather than hung on
the wall. It would be seen from above rather than parallel
to the viewer. So, it was a painting that would have a different
relationship to the viewer by virtue of its position. This
piece was so much fun and so successful that I proceeded
to paint any and every conceivable candidate for painting.
Many ordinary household items no longer seemed ordinary
to me. The possibilities they held for transformation by
paint enchanted me. Foot stools, benches, chair seats, file
cabinets all became "canvasses."
These
pieces were painted in the Hudson River Valley.
