In "Beyond
Memory Collages", I juxtapose a diversity of foreign
language texts. This creates a multiplicity of voices. As
with Beyond Memory Paintings, I explore some ancient symbols
that signify the regenerative force of nature: the amphora,
spiral, and egg/seed/eye.
In ancient
times, the amphora was a container for holy oil and wine.
A curved, female-shaped vessel, it symbolizes the life-giving
forces of nature. A small amphora with large upraised handles
resembles a bucranium (bull's skull); which, while male,
was revered in prehistoric times as a fertility symbol because
it resembles the shape of the uterus and fallopian tubes
of a woman. The Christian Chalice evolved from the amphora.
The spiral
is an archetypal fertility image found in nature. It is
a symbol of the cyclical, regenerative quality of life.
For example, the spiral is seen in unfolding fiddlehead
ferns in spring, umbilical cords, serpents, and cosmic spirals
of galatic nebulae in outer space.
The circle
in ancient times was considered a symbol of wholeness. Seeds/eggs/eyes
all represent circles with layers of life-giving or life-affirming
aspects. Obviously, seeds and eggs represent the beginnings,
or core, of life. The third eye continues to be a symbol
of good luck in some societies today. The Earth has long
been symbolized as a Cosmic Egg.
These
collages were created in Crete.
